 MISSIONS AT VALLEY

Sally Rzicznek, Mission Chair

Annual Valley Missions
Our support is distributed locally, nationally and internationally.  This year 11% of the offering will be used to support mission projects and the wider church through the Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly.   Plus we support the church wide special offerings: One Great Hour of Sharing, Pentecost, Peacemaking and Christmas Joy.

In addition, we have several “hands-on” missions:

  • We travel to Michigan or other areas to be part of a Mobile Health Fair (see 2007 fair info).

  • We have volunteers who staff the soup kitchen at North Church on Sundays in October each year.

  • The 'Remakeables' get together each month to sew and knit projects to be donated to several local missions.

  • Newly formed 'Valley Knitters' have started monthly gatherings to knit items for mission outreach, as well as personal items.  This group is open to both church and community members.

  • Each year we have the Christmas Angel Tree to support families in Geauga County and the New Life Community.

If you are interested in becoming part of Valley's mission work, please contact Sally Rzicznek, Mission Commission Chair, at sallyrzi@windstream.net .  Let's share our talents to help others!

2007 Health Fair Participation

Kinsman Health Fair (view photos)
Kinsman Presbyterian Church,  6383 Church St., Kinsman, OH 44428

The VPC Youth Group incuding Emily Bargiel, Sean Moore, Eric Wenz, Tony Winn, Claire Anderson, Hallie Anderson, Maggie Moore, and Ryan Bush along with Leaders Marty Anastasio and Rachel Barcikoski attended on Thursday, July 26, 2007.  We screened about 30 people.  It was Kinsman's first health fair.  They really appreciated the supply bags - more like overwhelmed.  We made a friend for life in Mary, who was in charge. We also shared ideas with the Kinsman's Youth Director.  Marty Anastasio, Youth Leader

East Cleveland Health Fair
First Presbyterian Church, East Cleveland, 16200 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44112

On Monday, July 30, 2007 nine members of VPC participated in screening folks for vision, hearing, dental, diabetes, blood pressure, height and weight.  Six young adults from the Synod of the Covenant greeted us and trained us for our jobs.  We chose First Presbyterian, East Cleveland because they are in the Presbytery of Western Reserve.  In fact many of those who came for screenings were members of the sponsoring church.  About 40 people went through our make shift health center between 3:00 and 7:30 P.M.  We had 38 personal health care kits donated from Valley members that were handed out at the exit interview.  It was a rewarding  experience and we were all glad for this opportunity to serve.  Thank you to the following participants:  Marilyn Bulanda, Mary Ann Depew, Carol Ferguson, Mary Hatch, Pastor Maryla Meagher, Jewell Paynther, Sally Rzicznek, Karen and Bob Winn.  Sally Rzicznek, Mission Chair

2006 Mobile Health Fair - Eight members of Valley have returned from Bay City, MI where they participated in six health fairs, resulting in over 300 participants screened, and traveling over 1000 miles. We served along with the five member Synod team, the Lake Huron Presbytery team, and a twelve member youth group from the Korean Presbyterian Church of Detroit who also provided physicians. The fairs were in schools serving children of Hispanic migrant workers, churches serving African American children, and an adult fair for migrant workers in a Catholic Church. Participants requiring further medical or dental attention were referred to free or low cost clinics for evaluation and treatment. We took with us and distributed 194 health fair mission packets, thanks to donations from all of you! Thank you for the opportunity to serve God in this very worth while mission.

2005 Mobile Health Fair - Another successful Mobile Health Fair with 13 people from Valley who were sowing seeds of God's love to over 400 people as part of the Synod's Annual Health Fair in the Bay City, Michigan area.  Accompanying the Synod's team were 7 individuals from Korea, as a part of their journey through the United States.

The term “Mobile” applies to the Winnebago-type van that is staffed by college-age men and women who travel to areas in Ohio and Michigan that are the summer homes of migrant workers.   While members of the migrant-worker family over the age of 13 are working in fields, the younger children attend local schools in pursuit of their education; it is in the schools that the daytime Health Fair takes place.    As in the past, this year there was a second Health Fair for screening the adults two evenings.

Volunteers assist the staff in areas of height, weight, hearing, vision, and blood pressure, as well as educating the participants on other heath related educational topics such as good oral hygiene, germs and the dangers of smoking.  The second to the last stop in the Fair is a discussion with a doctor who makes medical, vision or dental referrals to local free clinics.  The last stop in the Health Fair is when the participants receives a bag containing full-size portions of shampoo, soap, dental floss, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and a washcloth.  Thanks to all of you for contributing supplies for 185 bags, plus lots of extra items -- and to the Vacation Bible School for all the "gifts" to the children.  Please stop and chat with anyone of the 13 who were a part of this year's team to learn more: Ruthmary Clark, Judy Hahn,  Jane Hall-Nemeth, Beverly Keough, Jim & Mary K. Paisley,  Lynda and Jewel Paynther,  Emily Pagano and her fiancée, Jason,  Alan & Peggie Jo Shinagawa, and Karen Winn.

'Remakeables'
Since 1994 the Remakeables of Valley have been answering the call to mission and ministry in monthly gatherings of prayer, craftsmanship, and fellowship. Formed in 1994, their goal of recycling donated materials to create fabric and yarn products has resulted in children’s clothing and layette items; blankets, lap robes and quilts; kitchen apparel and accessories; church banners; worship bags; and soft toys and books. Recipients have included: Cleveland area missions and shelters (Providence House, Hattie Larlham, Little Sisters of the Poor, battered women’s shelter, Salvation Army); transitional housing (New Life Community, University Settlement House); local hospitals (MetroHealth, and Rainbow Babies and Children’s); Appalachian and Ethiopian missions; and projects for our own congregation. Their current goal is, in early June, to send quilts and baby blankets to areas stricken by Hurricane Katrina. The Remakeables invite you to be partners in mission through donations of woven cloth (no stretchy knits), gently used blankets and sheets (cotton or flannel), embroidery floss, ribbon — at least a yard in length, and your prayers. If you can cut, pin fabric, sew, or tie knots (or want to learn), why not join in this outreach and enjoyment of creating for those in need! Remakeables gatherings are the first Thursday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to noon in Fellowship Hall. Please come!
